About bmpreschool

Burke Mountain Preschool is inspired by Maria Montessori and the Reggio Emilia philosophy and it is based on a Tribes principles. By incorporating an inspiring principle in our program, our goal is to offer a program that nurtures the love of learning, provides a sense of curiosity, and respect for self and others. We believe that children are independent learners who want to learn different thing s at different times and in different ways. We try to foster their learning styles by offering a broad variety of activities. It is each childʼs choice to participate in activities, or, if they choose to, they can pass. We foster childrenʼs learning through play. We believe that without play, optimal learning, normal social functions, self-control, and other executive functions may not mature properly. In play, we learn how to deal with lifeʼs wins and losses with grace. The best thing we can give our children is self-control. Preschool childrenʼs ability to resist temptation is a much better predictor of eventual academic success than their IQ scores. We promote self-control not by making children sit still, but by encouraging them to play. One of the major ways that children adapt to their circumstances is through play.

Water Walk 2019

As a registered WE School, we do an annual Water Walk in support of providing clean water for those living in rural areas of our sponsor country, Kenya. This year, our preschool was able to raise $1684, providing clean water for an entire village ($1250) plus 17 other people ($25/pp) with clean water for life. This allows the children in these villages to attend school instead of making several trips back and forth to carry water home for their families. Thank you to all of those who contributed!

Fire Hall Field Trip

We learned lots about fire safety while having fun thanks to our preschool parent firefighters that put together this lovely event for us!

Spectacular Science!

When the weather doesn’t cooperate, we spend our days figuring out how things work, such as:

-why ducks don’t get wet as they swim across ponds

-how heavy air is

-why a candle loses its flame when we cover it with a jar

-how many drops of water we are able to put on a quarter

-how to place a cup containing a piece of paper into water and keep the paper dry
